Coroner’s Inquests

Compliance & Regulatory

What is involved?

Coroner’s Inquests are, by nature, emotive and often well publicised events which attract all sorts of scrutiny. Held in public (in all but exceptional circumstances) they provide a platform for the Coroner and other interested parties to explore, through the cross examination of witnesses, events leading to someone’s death.

Whilst the purpose is to establish how, when, and where a person died it often results in accusations of internal failings, such as shortfalls in training and supervision, when concerned with the actions of a corporate body.

Although an Inquest is entirely separate from criminal and civil proceedings (and therefore cannot determine criminal or civil liability) the outcome and conclusions will, invariably, influence those proceedings by, for example, persuading an investigative body to commence a prosecution.
