Electronic Travel Authorisation

Electronic Travel Authorisation

The Electronic Travel Authorisation scheme is a key element of the Government's plan to deliver on their universal 'permission to travel' requirement.

Once fully implemented, all Non-Visa National visitors and transit passengers (including EEA nationals) who do not require a visa, entry clearance or immigration status prior to coming to the UK for short stays (up to six months) should apply for and obtain an ETA prior to travel. The Requirement will also apply to those seeking entry under the Temporary Work - Creative Worker concession in advance on their travel to the UK.

The Government has introduced an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) scheme for visitors who are currently exempt from needing a visa. The ETA gives a visitor permission to travel to the UK for up to 6 months depending on the reason for travel and will be valid for 2 years.

From 15 November 2023, nationals of Qatar will need an ETA prior to travel.

From 22 February 2024, nationals of the following countries will also require ETA: Bahrain, Jordan, Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates.

Other countries which do not need visas to enter the UK, including European countries, will be rolled out during 2024.

It is important to understand the conditions of the ETA scheme as an application can be declared invalid if the requirements are not met at the time or subsequent to the application. Remaining in the UK for longer than permitted can have serious consequences on your eligibility for an ETA, or another visa type in the future.
