Freeths Legal Scholarship Scheme to run for the fifth year
“The most gifted minds can fail to reach their full potential due to factors outside of their control.”
Now in its fifth year, the Legal Scholarship Scheme at Freeths invests in aspiring lawyers with an invaluable opportunity at the very start of their careers.
Freeths is offering students in the Milton Keynes, Bucks, Beds and Northants area the opportunity to be a part of a scheme which offers the winner a £1000 bursary and paid work experience opportunities. The work experience, which takes place within the Milton Keynes office, allows the winner to gain insight into what the life of a commercial lawyer is really like.
The scheme is particularly aimed at providing opportunities for those wishing to embark on a career in law but who may need some assistance. Freeths, a top ranked UK firm in the Chambers & Partners Legal guide 2017, were featured in The Times on 9 February 2017, as one of seven firms who best represent diversity in trainee intake from state schools. In 2015, Freeths won the award for ‘Best Firm’ at the UK Diversity Legal Awards. These accolades are a testament to the work of the Freeths diversity and inclusion committee. Through the scholarship scheme and numerous university and diversity programmes, Freeths continues advancing towards achieving its vision of becoming a fully inclusive workplace where individuality and diversity are celebrated.
Valerie Warman, Partner and Head of Real Estate at Freeths in the Milton Keynes office commented:
“When we launched the scheme in 2013 we didn’t know what to expect but we’ve been absolutely delighted by the response we’ve had over the last few years and to see how the scholarship has benefited students. It has been a great success, helping the next generation of lawyers gain the confidence to pursue a career in law.
There is a lot more to the scheme than a bursary for the winning candidate. We give all the shortlisted candidates a useful session with some of our trainees and legal assistants finding out about careers in the law and a number of the shortlisted candidates have been invited back to complete work experience with us.”
Sherifat Aminu, former student at Stantonbury Campus in Milton Keynes, won the 2015 scholarship and spent two weeks in the Milton Keynes office in August 2016. She commented that the scheme provided ‘an invaluable experience which will be more than helpful to my future’.
Freeths welcome applications from students from Milton Keynes, Beds, Bucks and Northants schools and have already received a number of fantastic submissions. Students from local schools planning to study for a degree in law in September/October 2017 are all encouraged to apply without delay. Information about the scholarship and how to apply can be found here.
