Cleaning up the air we breathe | What are councils doing to combat air pollution? - Nottingham - 25 November

Crisis what crisis?

Research suggests that air pollution contributes to the equivalent of 40,000 early deaths in the UK each year. Recent data shows that legal limits on air pollution in 2010 have not yet been met. Environmental Activist charity, ClientEarth has successfully challenged the Government over its consistent failure to protect the public from toxic air pollution.

What is happening?

  • So far has been to burden local councils with the legal obligation to reduce air pollution, but the majority of councils lack the resources and technical knowhow to deal with the issue. Whilst many are doing their best, by developing air quality plans and implementing a raft of measures aimed at reducing vehicle emissions, for example, they too are facing increasing pressure from ClientEarth to meet air quality targets.

At Freeths LLP were committed to helping councils with this agenda and our Local Government team has brought together a panel of experts from a range of backgrounds both local and national, to help explain what is going on and what local authorities are doing, both individually and collectively, to meet the challenge. Lawyers have a key role to play in this process from assisting at the outset in securing grant funding from Government, to helping in procuring facilities to implement measures/infrastructure, to start tackling the problem. If you would like to know more about this interesting a rapidly developing area then please register to attend this interactive workshop.

This interactive workshop will include a panel of experts with first-hand experience of assisting local authorities, including:

  • Jim Scopes | Management Consultant
  • Peter Price | Independent Consultant
  • Nick Ayland | Director, ITP

The event will be hosted by Stephen Pearson, Partner and Rob Hann, Consultant at Freeths.
