Paying Tribute to Her Majesty the Queen
Today, we join the rest of the country, together with many other parts of the world, in mourning the loss of Her Majesty the Queen, Elizabeth II, our longest-reigning monarch. Our thoughts are, of course, with His Majesty the King and the other members of the Royal Family at this very difficult time.
The Queen has been a central part of life in the UK for seven decades, since the death of her father George VI in 1952. It is slightly incredulous to reflect that she in fact took the throne as far back as when Winston Churchill was in 10 Downing Street, just after World War II, and yet this week invited Liz Truss to be the 15th prime minister of her reign.
The Queen has been an inspirational leader of our nation; personifying the values of dignity, grace, humility, integrity, together with an overarching strong sense of service. Her Majesty led by example and earned the respect of not only everyone in our own country, but many others across the globe with her deep knowledge, her experience of world affairs, her mastery of political neutrality, and her dignity. From the beginning of her reign, her values were clear when, at her coronation, she said: “I have pledged myself to your service and through all my life I shall strive to be worthy of your trust.”
The outpouring of grief and sense of loss we are seeing in the country today bears testimony to just how loved she was. She will be sorely missed.
