Waking up to Packaging Obligations – How to reduce your exposure

A surprising number of retailers and consumer goods businesses have found the recent introduction of the Plastic Packaging Tax 2022 (PPT) to be an unpleasant wakeup call in that, in addressing their obligations under the PPT, they’ve discovered for the first time that they have been failing to comply with their obligations under the existing packaging regime (Producer Responsibility Obligations/ PRO) which have been in place since 2007. And if you’ve wrapped your head around PPT and PRO, don’t forget that another layer of packaging costs will soon(ish) be here in the form of the Extended Producer Responsibility for Packaging.

Panel of experts:

Kirstin Roberts
Kirstin is an experienced commercial lawyer, who has worked with businesses in the Waste and Renewables sector for over 17 years. Increasingly, Kirstin advises businesses which are implementing their ESG or Sustainability Plans assisting in all contractual requirements around waste reduction, waste re-use and End of Waste. She also advises on packaging issues and net zero provisions in supply chain contracts.

Thomas Hare
As Head of New Business, Tom is responsible for growing all the services Valpak has to offer as well developing and working on new services to meet with demand in an ever-changing global environment. Tom joined Valpak in 2007 as part of the Data Insights team helping companies to understand their packaging data. Tom is a firm believer in Valpak’s mission and values which is working together towards a profitable, sustainable, waste-free world. Outside of work Tom has a keen interest in all sport playing golf on a weekly basis. Tom also has a keen interest in cooking and growing his own fruit and vegetables.

Tim Cowling
Tim has been at Tarmac 16 years, joining as a graduate followed by roles in operational improvement and operations management. During his time as an energy manager, Tarmac achieved ISO 50001 certification. In his current role of regulatory affairs manager he is responsible for managing public policy engagement with a focus on climate change and environmental policy issues.

Mark Griffiths
Mark has been at Tarmac for 14 years originally joining the group as a Technical/ Quality Manager before progressing on to a Procurement Category Manager in 2010. In his current role Mark is part of the CRH Global procurement team looking after the Packaging category for the UK and Ireland.
