Derby Hospital Trust seeks removal of baby unit restrictions amid ongoing scrutiny

The University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust (UHDB) has recently made headlines by requesting the removal of restrictions placed on its maternity services at Royal Derby Hospital. These restrictions were imposed following a series of tragic incidents and a damning inspection by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), which rated the unit as "inadequate".

Inadequate maternity services

Substandard maternity care can take many forms, ranging from delays in recognising and responding to complications during labour, to failures in monitoring fetal wellbeing, administering appropriate medications, or escalating care when necessary.

Inadequate staffing levels, poor communication between healthcare professionals, and lack of adherence to clinical guidelines can all contribute to adverse outcomes. These lapses not only jeopardise the health and safety of mothers and babies but also erode trust in the healthcare system.

The Trust has acknowledged its failings and expressed deep regret, stating that changes have been implemented to improve care standards. However, the request to lift restrictions has sparked concern among patient advocacy groups and families affected by past incidents. Many argue that the Trust must demonstrate sustained improvements and transparency before such measures are reconsidered.

Karen Reynolds, Partner at Freeths, commented:

“We remain concerned as we have yet to see any meaningful reduction in the volume or nature of these maternity enquiries relating to the University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust. This suggests that the improvements claimed by the Trust are not yet being felt by patients. Families deserve reassurance that lessons have truly been learned and that safety is no longer compromised”.
