International Sportsperson Visa

International Sportsperson Visa: for sports stars and coaches

The International Sportsperson visa is suitable for internationally established elite sportspersons and qualified coaches coming to the UK to work for up to 3 years.

The visa enables sponsored individuals to live, work, and even study in the UK for the prescribed amount of time. You are also able to extend your stay if you wish.

Visa requirements

To apply for the visa, each applicant must meet the following criteria:

  • Be 16 years old or over;
  • Have a valid Certificate of Sponsorship;
  • Be endorsed by an approved UK sports body that confirms that the applicant is internationally established at the highest level, or have the potential to make a significant contribution to the development of sport at the highest level in the UK;

Some applicants will also be required to evidence:

  • An eligible qualification, if switching from a student visa;
  • Sufficient savings for the duration of the visa;
  • English language ability; and
  • Absence of tuberculosis.

Conditions and duration of visa

If you are successful in your international sportsperson visa application, you may be granted a visa for a period of 12 months, or up to 3 years. During this time, you will be able to live in the UK and carry out the work you are sponsored for. You will also be able to study.

After being in the UK for more than 5 years under this route, or a combination of routes, you will be able to apply for settlement. This will give you more rights in the UK.

Your dependants may also apply with you under this route, subject to meeting their eligibility criteria.
