About Ben
Ben is a Partner in the large real estate team based in our Nottingham head-office. He has more than ten years’ experience across a range of commercial real estate work, with an emphasis on acquisitions and disposals, complex development projects and real estate finance / funding, acting for developers, occupiers and funds. Whilst working across a wide variety of practice areas and sectors, Ben has particular expertise in mixed-use schemes, student accommodation and the private care sector.
Ben is known for providing an outstanding level of client service and for providing clients with understandable and commercially focused legal advice, even on the most complex transactions. He is highly responsive, works collaboratively with a client’s internal and wider professional team and enjoys finding pragmatic solutions to achieve the best possible outcome for his clients.
He is a previous recipient of Nottinghamshire Law Society’s Junior Lawyer of the Year Award.

Notable work & expertise
Ben advises a variety of developers on acquisitions, disposals and securing development funding. He has significant experience of dealing with complex site assembly on behalf of developers to facilitate disposals to end-users with the benefit of planning permission.
Recent Work
- Acting on the acquisition, development and funding of numerous employment land / care home sites across the UK for some of the country’s largest developers and operators including Lawrence Baker, Simply Group, Charterpoint, Barcroft Estates, Belmont Healthcare, Acacia Care and LNT.
- Advised the Nottingham Trent University in relation to the funding, development and leasehold disposition of a new e-sports learning centre in the heart of the University’s creative campus in Nottingham.
- Principal advisor to a national care home developer on the acquisition of a complex development site next to Stratford upon Avon train station, involving a complicated sub-sale structure, the release of title restrictions / covenants in favour of the adjoining landowner and entering into a Basic Asset Protection Agreement with Network Rail.
- Acting for a developer on the freehold site assembly of a residential scheme in Cornwall – including the legal scheme set-up for residential plots to be constructed by the developer.
Recent Work
- Advised the University of Lincoln in respect of its acquisition of a long leasehold interest in respect of a flagship student accommodation building (500+ beds) in the heart of the city, from a Singaporean sovereign-wealth fund.
- Led a multi-disciplinary team (including tax, construction and banking) on the on the £19m sale of a student accommodation portfolio in Nottingham, owned by an overseas client.
- Ben regularly advises one of UK’s leading sustainable building-materials groups, having completed a secondment with this client in 2016. Work has included minerals leases and associated options, profit a prendre leases and aftercare licences.
- Advising on the real estate aspects of a JV partnership between student accommodation providers based in the Midlands and Yorkshire.
Recent Work
- Led the real estate advice in relation to the £37m senior development funding and subsequent investment facility in respect of a state-of-the-art care home located on the Bishops Avenue in Highgate, London.
- Principal advisor on a £32m refinance of a leading student accommodation provider’s property portfolio in the East Midlands, involving two principal lenders and one mezzanine lender.
