About Chris

Chris Musgrave is a Senior Associate in the Intellectual Property & Media team at Freeths. 

Chris acts for a broad range of creative and commercial clients on IP matters, with particular focus on copyright, branding and digital media, including: 

  • Music and media companies
  •  Graphic design businesses
  • Cosmetics and beauty brands
  • Fashion labels and retailers
  • Technology companies

Areas of Expertise

  • Music Licensing & Collecting Societies: Chris regularly advises clients on music licensing issues, including negotiating and securing appropriate licences and resolving licensing disputes. Chris also helps clients navigate the complexities of working with collecting societies such as PRS for Music, PPL, MCPS, the CLA and MPLC
  • Advertising & Creative Projects: Chris advises brands and agencies on the legal risks arising from creative advertising campaigns. His work in this area covers trade mark clearance, copyright licensing, the use of third-party content and influencer arrangements - helping clients launch campaigns with confidence and minimising the risk of IP infringement
  • Photography Disputes: Chris has significant experience in handling photography-related IP disputes, including claims for copyright infringement, unauthorised use of images, and licensing disagreements. He acts for both rights holders and users of photographic content, providing pragmatic advice aimed at achieving swift and cost-effective resolutions
  • IP Support on Corporate Transactions: Chris provides specialist intellectual property support on corporate transactions, including mergers, acquisitions, and investment rounds. He advises on IP due diligence, the identification of IP assets, and the drafting of IP-specific warranties, indemnities, and ancillary documentation to ensure that IP rights and risks are properly addressed throughout the transaction process

Education

Chris studied law at the University of Sheffield before staying on to complete his master’s degree in corporate and commercial law, during which he specialised in intellectual property. Chris has also completed the Post-graduate Diploma in UK, EU and US Copyright Law at King’s College London.
