David Smith

David is a partner and joint head of tax at Freeths. He is dual qualified as a solicitor and chartered tax adviser.

He has significant experience advising on a wide range of national and international tax matters for clients across a broad spectrum of sectors and geographies, including private equity investors, international corporations, owner-managed businesses, government bodies and charities.

He advises on the taxation issues relevant to M&A transactions, demergers and reorganisations, equity and debt fund raising, private equity transactions and international structuring, providing both transactional support and standalone tax structuring and advisory services.

David also has considerable employment tax experience, advising on the tax treatment of remuneration packages and termination payments, status disputes, off-payroll engagements, labour supply chains and global mobility.

David is a regular contributor to tax and legal publications, including Tax Journal and LexisNexis and is described in Legal 500 as a “resourceful, trustworthy and highly pragmatic lawyer, who goes above and beyond to ensure that his clients are able to make informed choices.”
