"Thorough, professional, supportive and responsive but not afraid to speak her mind."
(Paul Hardwick, Development Project Director (retired), Westfield Shopping Towns Limited)
Heather is a trusted and experienced real estate lawyer. She works as part of her clients’ teams offering solutions, driving transactions and taking personal responsibility for delivery. She works effectively to negotiate through differences to unlock deals quickly and efficiently. She delivers large, time critical or complex property transactions from the front.
Heather became the first female partner in Freeths’ earlier business incarnation (Freeth Cartwright & Sketchley) in 1994 and has been with the Firm since then, except for a 10 year sabbatical which she took to raise her two children.
For many years during her early career, she acted for national house-builders engaged in acquisition and site assembly, options and joint ventures. She then gained experience in commercial development, acting on many supermarket and retail park developments, and later majored on hotel development.
After her sabbatical she returned to the partnership in 2011, with a fresh outlook and additional skills. She immediately became immersed in the aggregates sector acting for Tarmac; leading Freeths’ real estate support to their in-house legal team. She also led and managed the real estate support to the various corporate transactions carried out by Tarmac over the last seven years.
Although she maintains deep and consistent involvement in hotel sector development and management she has, since returning to the Firm, also added several years’ experience in the care home and extra care sector to her achievements.
Heather is married with two teenage children. She is a member of the Carlton Club and she is a churchwarden. Her interests include running, skiing and outdoor pursuits.
- Acting on a number of conditional acquisitions of sites for hotel and care developments, guiding and advising throughout the conditional period, managing the funding and construction process and advising on the management and disposal either by way of property or corporate structure.
- Preparation and negotiation of documents for the development of an energy from waste facility; rail sidings agreements and associated documents; development funding documents (both by way of traditional forward funding and ground rent structures); hotel operating arrangements; mineral leases.
“I have worked with Heather for over 20 years delivering multiple turn key developments of internationally branded hotels (IHG, Hilton and Radisson). She is much more than a lawyer; she is proactive, solves problems and gives me answers, all in a commercially focused way. She always makes herself available when required and never lets me down.”(Alastair Cattrell, MD, Wylam Investments Limited & VEC Envisage Group Limited)
“I sought Heather out to act for us because of her track record in the hotel development field. I have found her to be a trusted, safe pair of hands and an experienced negotiator. She absorbed and dealt with the detail of the transaction for us and presented clear, high level and commercially focussed information succinctly to our Board.”(Simon Cohen, CEO, Leicester Tigers)
“Thorough, professional, supportive and responsive but not afraid to speak her mind.”(Paul Hardwick, Development Project Director, Westfield Shopping Towns Limited)
