Richard advises a number of lender and borrower clients on their financing arrangements. In particular, he covers both investment and development real estate finance across sectors including retail, hospitality, residential, office, light industrial, healthcare and student accommodation.

Richard is also experienced in acquisition and structured finance matters, Sharia compliant finance, debt acquisitions, intercreditor issues and project and infrastructure finance, including PFI refinancing.

Richard is recognised as a Recommended Lawyer in the Legal 500 (2022 edition) and as a Recognised Practitioner in Chambers (2020 edition).

Recent Work

  • Advising the borrower in respect of their debt finance for the £200 million City North, Finsbury Park, Islington residential-led, mixed-use development scheme.
  • Acting for a mezzanine lender in relation to debt to be secured against a £25 million retail scheme in the Midlands, involving complex intercreditor arrangements.
  • Advising a borrower on the £15 million development financing of a retirement village utilising a Sharia compliant funding arrangement, in this instance a Murabaha structure.




Richard has very substantial expertise in the area of funding the care sector, acting for a number of borrower and lender clients in respect of their care home, retirement village or primary care assets. He can give advice on acquisition, investment and development funding.


  • Advising a borrower on the £15 million development financing of a retirement village utilising a Sharia compliant funding arrangement, in this instance a Murabaha structure.
  • Representing a Bank in relation to a £10 million investment loan for the refinancing of a care home in the South East of England.
  • Acting for a PE Fund in respect of over £50 million of loans provided for a development funding programme relating to 15 care home constructions over an 8 year period.
