More about the Horizon compensation schemes
Justice for Family Members: This forthcoming scheme is intended to recognise and compensate the harm suffered by family members of postmasters who were most severely affected by the Horizon IT failings.
While the scheme has not yet launched, it is expected to provide two possible routes to compensation:
- An individually assessed claim for family members who suffered a personal injury and have supporting evidence, or who continue to be affected today; and
- An event‑based application for a fixed payment where a sub‑postmaster relative experienced criminal prosecution, wrongful conviction, bankruptcy or wrongful death as a result of Horizon
Further details are expected ahead of the scheme’s anticipated launch in summer. Registering your interest now ensures you stay informed as soon as more information becomes available. If you think you may be eligible, click here to register your interest →
If you previously applied to the Horizon Shortfall Scheme and believe the compensation you received did not fully reflect your losses, you may now be able to ask for your case to be reconsidered through the appeal process.
This scheme may be relevant to you if you:
- Accepted a settlement without entering the dispute resolution process
- Rejected an offer without entering dispute resolution
- Settled early in the dispute process without legal advice
- Are still in the dispute resolution process but have not yet attended mediation
Recent Government announcements mean that individuals who may have under‑settled their claims can now seek a reassessment.

This scheme provides compensation to sub‑postmasters who were wrongly convicted as a result of the Horizon system and whose convictions have since been quashed.
You may already have been contacted by the Government inviting you to apply; however, you can still seek advice even if you have not received a letter and believe you may be eligible.
There are two main routes to compensation:
- A £600,000 full and final settlement, or
- A fully assessed claim where losses may exceed £600,000
In both cases, applicants are usually entitled to a substantial interim payment while their claim is progressed.
