Changes to the English language requirement | White Paper

The UK government is taking steps to enhance integration and community cohesion among migrant populations. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to ensure that individuals coming to the UK can fully participate in and contribute to society.

The Importance of English Language Proficiency

One of the key areas of focus is improving English language proficiency among immigrants. The Government considers that the ability to communicate effectively in English is essential for accessing services and integrating into local communities.

The Government plans to:

  • Increase language requirements: Raise the English language proficiency levels required for various immigration routes, including skilled workers and their dependants, from B1 to B2 of the CEFR.
  • Progressive language learning: Include requirements for immigrants to demonstrate progression in their English language skills over time.
  • Support for language learning: Collaborate with other Government departments to provide better access to English language classes for those already in the UK.

These measures will undoubtedly favour migrants from majority English language speaking countries and will adversely affect migrants whose first language is not English. It is crucial that the Government considers these impacts and provides adequate support to try to ensure that nationals of certain countries are not discriminated against by the introduction of higher English language thresholds.
