Consultant suspended over consent failures in Milton Keynes birth cases
A recent ruling by the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service (“MPTS”) has led to the suspension of Dr Premila Thampi, a consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist formerly based at Milton Keynes University Hospital, following serious findings of professional misconduct.
Dr Thampi, who has nearly 30 years of experience in the NHS, and who worked at Milton Keynes University Hospital from 2010 to 2020, was found to have failed to obtain informed consent and communicate adequately with patients during births in 2016 and 2018. The tribunal concluded that her actions amounted to impaired fitness to practise and warranted a three-week suspension to uphold public trust in the medical profession.
Key Findings from the Tribunal
- In the case of Patient A (October 2016), Dr Thampi proceeded with a forceps delivery despite the patient’s clear preference for a caesarean section. The tribunal found that she failed to properly explain the change in delivery method and made remarks that were deemed inappropriate and distressing during labour.
- For Patient B (June 2018), Dr Thampi exceeded safe practice guidelines by attempting vacuum extraction more than three times before switching to forceps, raising concerns about potential harm to the baby.
- Allegations involving a third patient were not proven.
Dr Thampi is currently appealing the decision and remains free to practice without restrictions during the appeal process.
Implications
This case underscores the critical importance of informed consent and respectful communication in clinical settings, particularly in high-pressure environments such as labour and delivery. It also highlights the role of regulatory bodies in maintaining professional standards and safeguarding patient rights.
Patient choice is fundamental to adequate medical care, but sadly, many patients report feeling dismissed and pressured into making certain decisions. Though a national enquiry into Maternity care is anticipated, the same issues arise time and time again. Choice is, and should always be, a priority for all medical professionals.
