Empowering Hospitality: Cutting Carbon, Saving Costs

Although the sector aims to reach net zero by 2040 operators are currently at different stages of their decarbonisation journey. With food production and waste accounting for a large percentage of UK emissions this is an area that needs to be addressed.

As part of the Government’s Plan for Change the DESNZ is funding a free trial to help small cafes, restaurants and hotels reduce energy bills and cut carbon emissions. 600 businesses (who apply and are then selected at random) will receive a free assessment delivered by Carbon Zero Services together with a bespoke reduction plan and coaching on energy and carbon reduction.

Businesses can apply for the free trial here.

Larger businesses are ineligible for the free trial however, UKHospitality has a carbon calculator which is available to all. This will enable businesses to understand their emissions and actions for reducing this. The calculator can be found here.

How can our hospitality lawyers help?

Freeths is one of the few law firms in the UK with a dedicated sustainability practice. We are a certified B Corporation, having met B Corp’s high standards of environmental and social impact and good governance. We are also recognised for both our internal sustainability credentials and our work to support clients in their sustainability journeys in the Legal 500 Green Guide. Three Freeths lawyers have also been named Green Ambassadors in the 2024 Legal 500 Green Guide, highlighting the firm as a leader in sustainability practice.

We can assist hospitality businesses wherever they are on their sustainability journeys, including in implementing net zero plans .

Sustainability does not have to come at a cost. We can help you identify new sources of revenue and/or cost-savings, including from on-site energy generation, moderating / managing your energy demand, improving energy efficiency, reducing or re-using waste generated by your business, yourself, or selling it to someone to whom it’s a resource. We can also assist with ensuring you know about your ESG reporting obligations and not falling foul of greenwashing rules as well as supporting you in applications for green loans and sustainability linked borrowing.

We are currently running a series of ESG focussed webinars for the hospitality sector. If you’d like to attend you can sign up here.
