Freeths advises UKAEA on strategic investment into AI engineering spinout Singular Machines
Leading law firm Freeths has advised the UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) on the strategic investment into Singular Machines, an engineering automation company commercialising technology developed through the UK fusion energy programme.
The investment round was led by the UK Innovation & Science Seed Fund and Oxford Science Enterprises, with participation from global engineering consultancy Arup and Japan-based Miraisozo Investments.
Singular Machines is developing coEngen, an artificial intelligence platform designed to support engineers managing increasingly complex projects while maintaining the traceability, assurance and professional judgement that underpin engineering practice.
This deal supports UKAEA's ambition to translate world-leading fusion research into commercial opportunities, helping to drive innovation, economic growth and the development of high-skilled jobs across the UK.
The Freeths team advising UKAEA was led by Managing Associate Rosanna Brown on the corporate aspects of the transaction, with Partner Martin Noble leading on the IP arrangements underpinning the commercialisation of the technology.
Rosanna said: “What stands out about Singular Machines is the pace at which an ambitious idea has been translated into a business attracting support from leading investors and industry partners.
“Working alongside UKAEA on this transaction gave us a front-row seat to the strength of the innovation being developed within the UK's fusion programme and the opportunities it can unlock beyond the sector.
“Supporting organisations like UKAEA as they bring breakthrough technologies to market is exactly the kind of work we enjoy. We're proud to have played a part in helping create the foundations for Singular Machines' next stage of growth.”
Heather Lewtas, Interim Chief Development Officer at UKAEA, added: “UKAEA’s world-leading science and innovation is accelerating the creation of commercial opportunities in the UK, and we are very pleased to support Singular Machines in spinning out and developing its industrial partnerships.”
