Freeths’ Penny Simpson and Richard Broadbent have been named Green Ambassadors in the latest edition of The Legal 500 Green Guide, marking the third consecutive year the firm’s lawyers have featured in the list.
Penny Simpson, Partner and Head of Environmental Law and the Natural Capital Legal Team, and Richard Broadbent, Director in the team, are highlighted in the guide for their work helping organisations navigate environmental regulation, nature recovery and sustainable development.
The Legal 500 Green Ambassadors Guide acknowledges law firms and lawyers advising on sustainability and the transition to a lower carbon economy. Freeths has featured consistently in the Guide, with Penny, Clare King and Kirstin Roberts included in 2025, and Richard and Kirstin in 2026.
In their Natural Capital Law capacity, Penny and Richard advise developers, commercial and private landowners, responsible bodies, entrepreneurial brokers and intermediaries, local authorities and corporate investors on how to unlock opportunities in nature-based markets. Their strategic advice helps clients develop and deliver projects involving biodiversity net gain, habitat banks, conservation covenants, species licensing, landscape recovery schemes and investment in natural capital.
Penny and Richard have a particular focus on sustainable development and infrastructure. They help landowners, developers and businesses manage environmental statutory and regulatory requirements, unlocking commercially viable projects.
Freeths’ Director of Responsible Business Ben Churchill said: “Penny and Richard are doing exactly the kind of work that matters to our clients: helping them make sense of a fast-changing environmental landscape while keeping sight of their wider commercial ambitions."
“What’s particularly pleasing is to see Freeths represented in the Green Ambassadors Guide for a third consecutive year, highlighting the quality of people we have working across environmental, planning, natural capital and clean energy, and our increasing ability to provide joined-up support to clients in this space.”
