Closure of Fortitude Law leaves vaginal mesh clients looking for representation

On 18 May 2023, the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) closed down the practice of Fortitude Law (led by Darren Hanison), which was located in Haywards Heath, West Sussex.

Following the closure of Fortitude Law, a firm called Lester Aldridge has been helping with the administration of the closure, however, at Freeths we understand the impact that this closure will have on the clients who were relying on them to bring vaginal mash claims on their behalf. We appreciate this will have brought even more distress into a situation which is already highly difficult.

With this in mind, the most important factor to consider is where Fortitude Law’s existing clients will now find help with their ongoing cases as Fortitude Law are no longer able to act for these clients with immediate effect.

The majority of Fortitude Law’s clients were bringing claims in relation to the negligent use or vaginal mesh – this includes TVT (transvaginal tape) and polypropylene mesh insertions. Such cases are the speciality of many of our solicitors within our medical negligence team.

About vaginal mesh & TVT implants

Vaginal mesh or TVT (transvaginal tape) are mesh implants used on patients who are suffering with urinary stress incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse after giving birth. These types of mesh implants have been heavily used in surgery across the UK due to them being considered a less invasive procedure with less recovery time for the patient.

Patients who have been given vaginal mesh or TVT implants often suffer with complications such as:

  • Pain in the pelvic area
  • Incontinence
  • Mesh erosion/protrusion
  • Perforation
  • Irregular vaginal bleeding
  • Infection
  • Bladder/bowel problems or changes
  • Sexual issues including pain
  • Pain in the buttocks or legs

In some cases, the bladder, bowels or urethra have been damaged by the mesh surgery. And as a result of this, it may be necessary to have the mesh and tape removed.

Our vaginal mesh & TVT compensation expertise

Cases involving vaginal mesh or TVT are highly specialist and require medical negligence solicitors with experience in such cases, as those representing these clients must understand the intricacies and nuances of the issues at play.

Vaginal mesh lawsuit – successful claim outcomes

We have successfully run a number of vaginal mesh and TVT cases for our clients, against both NHS trusts and private surgeons. We have obtained significant compensation settlements, including an out of court settlement for £80,000 for one claimant, and have secured apologies from those responsible for the challenges our clients have had to face.

Vaginal mesh mediation

We are now working on taking a number of significant vaginal mesh and TVT cases towards mediation with the NHS Resolution’s panel firm. This will allow our clients to secure a reasonable settlement, whilst allowing them to have their say and explain the impact of their experiences to the trust.

Our medical negligence solicitors are renowned for being sensitive, empathetic and considerate, we are well-known for our knowledge, we understand the challenges which our clients face, and we will be there to help you through the process each step of the process.
