Nottingham Maternity Review now gathering pace as Rishi Sunak addresses parliament

Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, has recently spoken in Parliament about the case of Wynter Andrews, who died in her mother’s arms in 2019 at just 23 minutes old.

Wynter died from hypoxic ischaemic encephalopathy (loss of oxygen to the brain) which could have been prevented had staff at the Queens Medical Centre in Nottingham delivered her sooner.

In an unprecedented move, Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust were fined £800,000 in January 2023 after pleading guilty to two criminal charges brought by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

Speaking to Parliament, Rishi explained, ‘when situations like this do arise, transparency is paramount so we can seek answers and make improvements.’

The parents of Baby Wynter have recently spoken to ITV news, and the story can be accessed here: Parents of baby who lived for 23 minutes say others have have avoided harm because of her story.

Nottingham’s independent maternity review, led by Senior Midwife Donna, is gathering pace. More than 950 families and 450 staff members have now agreed to be part of the review. However, since the end of November, the Trust have sent out around 1,400 letters, meaning there are still hundreds more families who are yet to come forward.

The review team are interested in speaking to families who have significant or serious concerns about the maternity care they received at the Queens Medical Centre or City Hospital.
