Qualifying as a Solicitor in England and Wales
Formal training is delivered by way of our traineeship. Academic training is delivered either part time or full time by the University of Law where our trainees will prepare for and sit the solicitor qualifying examinations, SQE 1 and SQE 2. In addition, Trainees are required to complete two years' Qualifying Work Experience (QWE).
Trainees are supported by tutors at the University of Law and will have guidance from a supervisor and an assigned trainee mentor at Freeths. All preparatory course fees and first sitting exam fees are funded by Freeths. Once the trainee has completed our traineeship and passed the SQE they will be ready to qualify as a solicitor. All new trainees will follow the SQE route to qualification, we are no longer accepting candidates with the LPC.
Qualifying in Scotland
To qualify as a solicitor in Scotland, Trainees will need to have either completed an LLB in Scots law or the two-year accelerated LLB in Scots law for non-law graduates and the Diploma in Professional Legal Practice, PEAT 1, before they can apply to our Legal Graduate Programme. Formal training with Freeths will then follow the Law Society of Scotland’s PEAT 2 route: a two-year traineeship where trainees build their skills through supervised practical experience. Throughout the traineeship, trainees will be supported to develop the knowledge, confidence and professional experience needed to qualify as a Scottish solicitor, alongside completing the required reviews, trainee continuing professional development and PEAT 2 record.
