Bioenergy plays a key role in GB’s Net Zero pathway by delivering dispatchable, low–carbon energy while supporting the circular economy and sustainable waste management. Technologies including anaerobic digestion, biomass, biogas–to–grid and energy–from–waste contribute to the decarbonisation of heat, power and transport, while providing resilient baseload and flexible generation alongside intermittent renewables such as wind and solar.
Unlocking the full potential of bioenergy requires carefully balanced feedstock and offtake contracts, alongside regulatory frameworks, together with long–term investment structures that provide operational certainty in a highly regulated and technically complex sector.
Our Bioenergy capabilities
With strong roots in natural gas, biogas and waste–to–energy, our lawyers advise across the full lifecycle of bioenergy projects, from early–stage development and structuring through refinancing, sales and portfolio investment. We act for developers, owner–operators, investors, lenders, offtakers, feedstock providers and strategic counterparties on complex transactions across the UK bioenergy market.
Our experience includes advising on the development of greenfield facilities, advising on operational facilities and their routes to market, standalone assets and portfolios, and projects integrated into wider waste management, industrial and energy systems. We are particularly experienced in anaerobic digestion and biogas–to–grid projects, where commercial, regulatory and operational risk must be carefully aligned to ensure bankability.
