 What is website accessibility?

What is website accessibility?

Website accessibility refers to the practice of making websites both accessible and usable by as many users as possible, including those with disabilities and impairments.

Accessibility requirements ensure that websites are designed and developed so that people with a wide range of abilities and disabilities can perceive, understand, navigate, and interact with the web.

The key principles of website accessibility are:

Perceivable

Website information and user-interface components must be presentable to users in ways they can perceive. This includes providing text alternatives for non-text content and making content adaptable, where relevant

Operable

User-interface components and website navigation must be operable. This means that organisations should make all website functionality available from a keyboard and allow users enough time to read and use content

Understandable

Information and the operation of the user-interface on a website must be understandable. This involves using plain language and making text both readable and predictable

Robust

Website content must be robust enough to be interpreted reliably by a wide variety of users. Organisations should ensure that their website is compatible with assistive technologies to grant accessibility for users with diverse requirements and needs.

How is website accessibility regulated?

Website accessibility is enforced through several regulations and standards:

  • Equality Act 2010

  • EU Accessibility Act 2025

  • Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2

  • Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) Accessibility Regulations 2018

The Government Digital Service and Central Digital and Data Office also monitor ongoing compliance by organisations with accessibility regulations.

Non-compliance can result in organisations facing legal action and penalties.
